MetaTrader 4 is an installed program: templates, indicators and Expert Advisors sit on the computer, while the account and its positions sit on the Exness server.

The two halves of an MT4 setup
- The account half is on the server: the account number, its password and the Exness server name shown in the Personal Area identify it from any device.
- The workspace half is local: chart templates, profiles, custom indicators and Expert Advisors live in the MetaTrader 4 installation on that computer.
- Reinstalling on a new machine restores the account instantly and the workspace not at all, which is what makes the local folder worth knowing about.
- MetaTrader 4 runs on Windows, macOS, iPhone (iOS) and Android, and the workspace half is smaller on the mobile builds.
- Expert Advisors and custom indicators are the clearest local-only part: they execute on the machine that is running, not on the server.
- The Exness web terminal is the opposite arrangement — nothing is stored locally, and nothing has to be moved when the computer changes.
