Exness MT4 — What Lives on the Machine and What Lives on the Server — Pakistan

MetaTrader 4 is an installed program: templates, indicators and Expert Advisors sit on the computer, while the account and its positions sit on the Exness server.

Flexible

An MetaTrader 4 setup is split in two. The account — its number, its password and the Exness server name from the Personal Area — lives on the server and follows the trader to any device. The workspace — chart templates, profiles, custom indicators and Expert Advisors — lives inside the installation on one computer and does not follow anything. The Exness web terminal removes the second half entirely.

This is why an MT4 that connects but looks empty is usually a workspace question, not an account one.

Frequently asked questions

What does MT4 keep on the computer rather than on the server?
Chart templates, profiles, custom indicators and Expert Advisors. They are part of the installation, not part of the account.
What follows the account to a new device?
The account number, its password and the Exness server name, and with them the open positions and the history. Those are held on the server.
Why does a fresh MT4 install look empty?
Because the workspace half did not come with it. The account connects as before; the templates, indicators and Expert Advisors have to be placed in the new installation.
Do Expert Advisors run when the computer is off?
No. An Expert Advisor executes inside the running MetaTrader 4 terminal, which is on the machine rather than on the server.
Which setup has no local half at all?
The Exness web terminal. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing stored locally and nothing to move when the computer changes.
Where is the Exness server name shown?
In the Personal Area, alongside the account number. MetaTrader 4 asks for both when a connection is set up.
